The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is interrogating Rabri Devi, the former Chief Minister of Bihar, at her residence in Patna. The questioning is related to a suspected case of exchanging land for employment opportunities.
According to sources from the CBI, they have scheduled an appointment to record Rabri Devi’s statement and this is not a search or raid.
The interrogation of Rabri Devi by the CBI comes after a letter was sent by eight Opposition parties, including her son and Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar, Tejashwi Yadav, to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The letter alleged that central agencies were being misused by the ruling BJP party for political purposes and mentioned the targeting of opposition leaders such as Lalu Yadav, the former Chief Minister of Bihar and the patriarch of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) party. The letter expressed concerns that the actions of the central agencies were indicative of them working in favor of the ruling party.
The CBI’s investigation into the land-for-jobs case involves the Yadav family, including Tejashwi Yadav, Rabri Devi, Misa, and Hema. The FIR filed in May 2022 alleges that during Tejashwi Yadav’s tenure as Union Railway Minister from 2004 to 2009, his family members bought land at significantly reduced prices in exchange for employment opportunities.
Apart from Lalu Yadav, his wife, and daughters, the FIR also mentions 12 individuals who allegedly received jobs in exchange for land. In July of the previous year, Bhola Yadav, a former Officer on Special Duty (OSD) and aide to Tejashwi Yadav, was arrested by the CBI in connection with this case.
Rabri Devi is being interrogated just one week before the Yadav family and other accused individuals are scheduled to appear in a Delhi court for their involvement in the land-for-jobs case.
Last year, the CBI filed a chargesheet against the accused under charges of conspiracy and corruption in the land-for-jobs case. The FIR claims that despite being residents of Patna, certain individuals were appointed as substitutes for Group-D posts in railway zones located in Mumbai, Jabalpur, Kolkata, Jaipur, and Hajipur. Allegedly, in exchange for these jobs, these individuals transferred ownership of their land to Mr. Yadav’s family members and a company later acquired by the family.
According to the case filed by the CBI, some individuals allegedly transferred ownership of their land to the Yadav family at significantly reduced prices. Furthermore, it is alleged that these appointments were made in violation of the guidelines set by the Railways.
The leaders of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) party have dismissed the allegations against them, calling them politically motivated. Last week, Rabri Devi stated that the BJP was afraid of Tejashwi Yadav, and that the Yadav family has faced such accusations for the last 30 years. She further added that the BJP was afraid of Lalu Yadav in Bihar.
