The Delhi government’s labor department has recently taken a significant step towards providing several benefits to employees, with a particular focus on women. The department has approved a new proposal that ensures that overtime employees in Delhi will now receive full compensation for their hard work. As per the newly drafted policy, these employees will be eligible for double their regular salary, thereby providing them with an extra source of income. This decision is expected to bring significant relief to a large number of employees who often work long hours and may struggle to make ends meet.
The policy approved by Delhi’s labor department states that working over 8 hours a day or 48 hours a week is overtime, with double pay for extra hours.
In addition to defining overtime, the Delhi labor department’s policy also limits an employee’s workday to 12 hours and workweek to 60 hours to prevent overwork.
The Delhi labor department’s policy also includes provisions such as prohibiting employees from working overtime for seven consecutive days. If an employee does work overtime, they will be paid twice the hourly rate based on the minimum wage.
Labour Minister Raj Kumar Anand recently convened a high-level meeting to discuss the draft policy, which included provisions for allowing women to work night shifts and ensuring their safety. The policy requires employers to make proper arrangements for the safety of women in the workplace. These measures are aimed at ensuring that women are able to work in a secure environment and are not subjected to any form of harassment or discrimination.
New Policy to Require Women’s Consent in Work-related Matters
The policy permits women to work during night shifts from 7 pm to 6 am.
The policy emphasizes the importance of obtaining the consent of women employees for night shift work. In addition, employers will be required to arrange transportation for women working during night shifts, from their homes to the workplace.
The policy also mandates proper arrangements for basic facilities like toilets, drinking water, and transportation for women in the workplace. Furthermore, these facilities must be located in close proximity to their workplace for convenience and safety reasons.
To ensure the safety of women employees, the policy also requires employers to provide a separate contact number, which should be prominently displayed at the workplace and on vehicles. This number will enable women to seek help in case of any emergency.
The policy mandates arrangements to prevent sexual harassment of women at the workplace in compliance with the 2013 Act.
Experience Letters and Salary Slips to be Provided to Employees under New Policy
During the meeting, the labor minister emphasized the importance of providing joining and experience letters to all employees, regardless of their field of work.
Under the new policy, employers will be required to maintain records of all their employees, and ensure that every employee receives a salary slip.
