Kerala Higher Education Minister R Bindu announced on Thursday that female students over the age of 18 would be granted a 60-day maternity leave. She went on to say that the required attendance percentage for female students will be 73 percent.
“Girl students over the age of 18 can take up to 60 days of maternity leave. Female students’ required attendance percentage will be 73 percent, including menstrual leave, down from 75 percent previously. “An order has been issued in this regard,” R Bindu told news agency ANI.
Menstrual leave in Kerala
Bindu announced on Tuesday that the government intends to grant menstrual leaves to all state universities, as recently announced by the Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT).
“Considering the mental and physical difficulties experienced by female students during menstruation,” she said in a press release issued by her office.
Notably, on January 14, the CUSAT announced menstrual leave for its female students. The action was taken in response to a demand from the student union, which was led by SFI.
