An event to protest the “rushed” internal assessment (IA) scheme and the postponement of exams has been planned for Monday at noon at the Arts Faculty by the Delhi University chapter of the Students’ Federation of India (SFI).
A new plan adopted by the executive council on February 3 reduced the weightage to a theory-based paper for semester-end centralised DU examinations to 56%.
As a result, the internal assessment, which previously carried 25% of the final grade, will now carry a greater weight in the eyes of the students than it did when the theory exam carried a 75% weight.`
According to an SFI press release, the internal marking has now been raised to 45% under the new IA scheme. This policy is blatantly anti-student because it takes away their autonomy and downplays the significance of standardised tests. Additionally, the fact that such a significant policy change was implemented so quickly demonstrates that the administration only views this new group of students as test subjects.
According to the press release, SFI DU took up the issue after the new internal assessment scheme was approved 15 days prior to the first-semester batch’s exams. They allegedly spoke to first-year students in numerous DU colleges about their reactions and claimed to have learned that the majority of them still had not finished their syllabuses.
