Jamia Millia Islamia students protest, demand CUET for admission

0

A protest was held by a group of students outside Jamia Millia Islamia, demanding admission to all courses through the Common University Entrance Test (CUET).

Despite the University Grants Commission (UGC) introducing the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) last year for admission to both graduate and postgraduate courses, the Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) has decided to maintain its own admission process, as announced earlier this month.

“Our protest today is against the non-adoption of CUET by Jamia. Every central university has already adopted it, so why should there be an issue with Jamia?” questioned Ashutosh, a participating student.

The protest outside Jamia Millia Islamia was organized by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), which is affiliated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

During the protest, the students held saffron flags and carried placards with messages such as ‘End the admission scam’ and ‘Bring CUET’. They also chanted slogans, demanding the adoption of CUET for admission to all courses.

In addition to their demand for the adoption of CUET, the students also alleged that the university had not yet provided PhD scorecards.

A senior official announced on Friday that earlier this month, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) had made the decision not to adopt the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) for admission to most undergraduate and postgraduate courses. The university cited a lack of time to modify university regulations, but it will still apply the CUET for admission to 20 specific programs.

This academic year, CUET will be used for admission to 20 courses, including B.Sc. (Hons) Physics and B.Sc. (Hons) Chemistry, which is an increase of 10 courses from the previous academic year.

Recently, the University Grants Commission (UGC) directed Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) to introduce the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) for all undergraduate courses beginning from the academic session of 2023-24.
