A top city official has reported that a gas leak in Ludhiana, a city in the northern Indian state of Punjab, has resulted in the deaths of at least 11 people, with another 11 admitted to the hospital for treatment. The official further stated that the situation is grave enough to warrant the evacuation of the entire area affected by the gas leak.
According to a video feed shared by the ANI news agency, a team from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) was present at the site of the gas leak in Ludhiana on Sunday. In the video, police officers can be seen patrolling the area while wearing masks and urging locals to stay away from the cordoned-off zone. The footage also shows the NDRF team actively responding to the disaster in an effort to mitigate the damage and help those affected.
The Chief Minister of Punjab, Bhagwant Mann, has expressed his deep sorrow over the tragic gas leak that resulted in multiple fatalities in Ludhiana.
In a tweet regarding the tragic gas leak incident in Ludhiana’s Giaspura area, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann expressed his sadness, stating that the incident was “very sad.” He further added that police, government, and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams were present at the scene, working to provide all possible assistance to those affected.
During a press conference, Ludhiana Deputy Commissioner Surabhi Malik informed reporters that the fatalities resulting from the gas leak were likely due to “gas contamination.”
Deputy Commissioner Surabhi Malik suggested that a chemical reaction between methane and another chemical may have caused the gas leak in Ludhiana. The investigation is ongoing and the NDRF is collecting samples for further analysis.
India experienced one of the deadliest industrial disasters in history in 1984 when a gas leak occurred at a pesticide plant in the central city of Bhopal. The tragedy claimed the lives of approximately 3,500 people, primarily those living in shanties around the Union Carbide plant, with thousands more perishing in the years that followed. Even today, people continue to suffer from the after-effects of the incident.
In 2020, a gas leak near a chemical plant in the southeastern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh resulted in the deaths of 11 people. The incident also left at least 800 individuals hospitalized due to breathing difficulties and skin irritation caused by the gas leak.
In 2017, a gas leak occurred near a school in southern New Delhi, which resulted in over 200 pupils being admitted to the hospital.
