Russia is a highly sought-after study abroad destination for Indian medical students, with 18,039 Indian students studying in Russia in 2022 according to data from the Indian government. Although the Ministry of External Affairs does not maintain data on the courses pursued by these students, data from the National Board of Examinations (NBE) shows that 4,515 students appeared for the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) in 2021, and 1,119 students successfully cleared the screening test.

Course structure
In Russia, pursuing an MBBS degree is a six-year journey, consisting of five years dedicated to academic study and one year for an internship. Typically, this is a separate form of education known as specialist programs, except for dentistry and pharmacy, which lasts for five years, and nursing, which lasts for four years.
The initial three years of the program focus primarily on the theoretical aspects, while the final three years concentrate on practical training. The program is divided into 12 semesters, with each year consisting of two semesters.
The undergraduate programmes in Russia typically last for four years, after which students are awarded a bachelor’s degree and a diploma of higher education. After completing the undergraduate programme, students can opt for a Master’s programme to further their education. The academic year in Russia usually commences between September and October.
Admission process
Admission to MBBS courses in Russia does not require an entrance exam. Students interested in pursuing MBBS in Russia can apply by visiting the website of the university or institute of their choice and filling out the application form.
After submitting the required documents as proof of identity and educational qualifications, the university authorities will cross-check the information provided. If the student is selected, the university will reach out to them through email to inform them personally.
Scholarships
Candidates who are interested in obtaining a scholarship to study in Russia may be required to take tests, participate in interviews, and compete in academic competitions, depending on the university and country. Following the selection process, candidates who have been chosen will find their names listed on the Rossotrudnichestvo or Russian Embassy’s website or representation.
Aspirants should note that in addition to clearing the Unified State Examination (EGE), they may also need to pass admission tests.
Government scholarships in Russia provide free tuition for the duration of the chosen program, maintenance allowance for the entirety of the study period, regardless of the candidate’s success. The average scholarship in 2020 was 1,484 roubles per month (approximately $22), as well as access to dormitory accommodation, if available. However, the scholarship does not cover travel costs or living expenses.
Tuition fees
The cost of studying in the full-time department for a Bachelor’s degree in Russia ranges from approximately 240,000 to 260,000 rubles ($3,430 to $3,715) per year. The minimum cost is 122,500 rubles ($1,750) per year, while the maximum cost is 880,000 rubles ($12,570) per year.
A Specialist’s degree, which places more emphasis on practical training, is awarded after at least five years of study. The average cost of studying for a Specialist’s degree in the full-time department is around 240,000 to 260,000 rubles* ($3,430 to $3,715) per year, with a minimum cost of 122,500 rubles ($1,750) per year and a maximum cost of 632,580 rubles ($9,036) per year.
Recognised colleges
There are numerous medical institutions in Russia, with around 70 universities offering medical training. These institutions include specialized medical educational organizations and dedicated medical faculties within universities that offer a broad range of educational programs.
According to the data provided by the NBE for FMGE candidates, some of the most sought-after MBBS colleges in Russia are Tver State Medical University, Stavropol State Medical University, Volgograd State Medical University, Smolensk State Medical University, Kazan State Medical University, Kursk State Medical University, Northern State Medical University, Penza State University Medical Institute, Belgorod National Research University Medical Institute, and the Medical Institute of Tambov State University Named After G. R. Derzhavin, among others.
Medium of training
In Russia, MBBS courses are generally taught in English, although a few institutions offer the program in Russian. International students studying MBBS in Russia are typically given the opportunity to learn the Russian language in addition to their medical studies. This is to ensure a seamless transition from English to Russian later on in the course if necessary.
