Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the Indian National Congress, said on Saturday that the opposition parties are united in their fight against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He made the remarks at a rally in Amethi, his former constituency in Uttar Pradesh.
Gandhi said that the BJP has “failed” the people of India and that the opposition is ready to “give a new government” to the country. He also said that the opposition is committed to “fighting for the rights of the poor, farmers, and the middle class.”
The BJP has been in power at the Centre since 2014. It has been criticized for its handling of the economy, the farmers’ protests, and the COVID-19 pandemic.
The opposition parties have been holding a series of rallies and meetings in recent months to prepare for the next general elections, which are due in 2024.
In his speech, Gandhi also attacked the BJP’s policies on Kashmir, the National Register of Citizens (NRC), and the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). He said that the BJP is “trying to divide India” and that the opposition will “fight to protect the unity of the country.”
The rally in Amethi was attended by a large number of people. Gandhi’s supporters cheered and waved Congress flags as he spoke.
It remains to be seen whether the opposition parties will be able to unite and defeat the BJP in the next general elections. However, Gandhi’s speech in Amethi suggests that the opposition is determined to give the BJP a tough fight.
